Secure Web Site

When you go to a web site you might notice a little green lock to tell you that the web site you are visiting is a secure connection. The problem is that its not secure, not safe, not a web site that is honest or even the web site it claims to be. In the scheme of things it means very little. It just means that any information you fill in on a form like your login name or password are not seen by your service provider. (Like Telstra and Optus). But they still know the web sites you visited and the pages you visited.

There are degrees of safe connections. If you look at the snapshot of the three browsers above you will note it has a secure lock like before but also a the full name of the organization in the URL bar. This is a verified web site so somebody verified that that web site belonged to the Organization it claims to be. This involves a special process of that company having to submit information about itself to prove to the certificate people they are the company they claim.

For a banking organization this is vital although most users of the web site probably don’t even know the distinction between a verified web site and one that isn’t like the first example.
